One Water Vision

A sustainable and integrated water management: a central target of One Water Vision

The One Water Vision initiative places sustainable, integrated water management at the heart of its priorities, recognizing its crucial role for all uses, whether agricultural, urban, industrial or environmental. Agriculture remains the world's leading consumer of freshwater, accounting for around 70% of global consumption, and this sector faces a number of challenges: recurrent droughts, climate change, increased competition between uses, and deterioration in the quality of water resources.

These hydrological pressures for all users not only weaken agricultural production, but also the balance of ecosystems and the water security of territories. Effective responses require greater coordination between local, national and international stakeholders, as well as the support of public policies and government aid.

To meet these challenges, One Water Vision is built around 5 complementary pillars of action:

  • High resolution monitoring of water resources (TRISHNA, Sentinel and AI)
  • Projecting changes in water resources and adaptation to climate change
  • Agro-ecological and digital transitions: acceleration through water living labs
  • Governance of water resources: Integration into national systems
  • Capacity building and training, citizen science

As part of its implementation, One Water Vision will focus its actions primarily on pillars 1, 3 and 5. Pillars 2 and 4 will be developed by our institutional, scientific and operational partners, and deployed locally within the International Research Consortium, according to national contexts and the needs identified in each territory.
