Working Groups

Working Groups

These working groups provide a structured space to develop projects, exchange knowledge, communicate ideas, and explore practical applications of satellite data. They allow participants to discuss what is feasible with Earth observation, refine approaches, and align efforts on key water-related challenges.
Launch is expected in October/November and the descriptions of each working group will be reworded based on discussions among participants.

Working Group 1 - Blue Water
This group will focus on the use of satellite data to better understand and monitor blue water resources, such as rivers, lakes, reservoirs, dams, underground water and floodplains.
Topics include measuring water levels, estimating discharge, detecting hydrological changes, working on water quality and linking satellite observations to modeling approaches such as digital twins.
The WG will also explore practical case studies at national and transboundary basin scales, and identify opportunities to combine satellite data (SWOT, GRACE, …) with in-situ measurements and existing platforms.

Working Group 2 - Green Water
This group will explore the potential of satellite data (TRISHNA) for monitoring evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and agricultural water use (irrigation network, drought, water stress, …).
Discussions will address the resolution and accuracy needed to support agriculture and water managers, and how satellite can complement existing methods (ex: digital twins, modeling frameworks…).
Participants will work on identifying agricultural case studies (field or basin level), assessing links between water stress, crop productivity, irrigation efficiency, sustainable practices and climate adaptation strategies.

Working Group 3 - Services for Users & Capacity Building
This WG will focus on turning satellite and model outputs into operational services accessible to decision‑makers, basin authorities, and local communities, to improve local, national and transboundary governance.
It will explore needs in training, tools, and methodologies to ensure data are not only produced but understood and used.
Members can propose formats for capacity building (webinars, training kits, living labs, platforms) and identify gaps in knowledge transfer. The group will also reflect on how these services can contribute to global agendas like SDG 6 and UN Water, and how to evaluate societal and ecological impacts.

Working Group 4 - Data & Infrastructures
This Working Group focuses on how data from SWOT, TRISHNA, and other Earth observation missions can be rapidly processed, shared, and integrated into decision-making at multiple levels. It will explore how to build and strengthen research infrastructures, from calibration/validation networks and national observatories to digital platforms and open repositories, that make satellite insights accessible and actionable.
The group will also address challenges of interoperability, data sovereignty, and FAIR principles, and will discuss how governance and institutional frameworks can ensure that information flows efficiently across agencies, borders, and user communities.
